PTMBA-SE 1st year



"Sky is the limit and it is the reality at NMIMS!”

Over the years in school, having admired all my teachers it was always a dream to teach a group of students and share the power of learning and knowledge! It was then in 2014, when my aunt introduced me to Vivekananda Youth Forum, an NGO providing education and vocational training to adolescents residing in the slums of Juhu. Interacting with these young minds, I realised that this was the perfect place for me, the development sector. Over the years till date, I regularly volunteer and teach students of grade 8, 9 and 10. During my graduation years, I played an active part with the Rotaract Club of my college, spearheading various initiatives with slum children, special children, old age homes, and villages. Although my course, Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), gave an overview of managing a business enterprise, my long term goal is/was to start a hybrid model social enterprise.

That is when chords matched and in April 2019, I came across the PTMBA SE Course at NMIMS. Having interacted with past alumnis of the Course, the Chairperson of the Course and present students, I was sure this Course was the perfect fit for me.

Over the past six (6) months, this Course has added a lot of value to the limited knowledge I had about the social/development sector. From learning the financial aspect of social enterprises, to understanding the process to start a ‘for profit’ social enterprise, to the HR approach of NGOs and the legal side, the first two trimesters have been enriching.

Sky is the limit and it is the reality at NMIMS! There are ample of resources accessible to us on the social sector which we refer to – research papers, publications, articles, cases of Harvard and the digital library to complete all our assignments on time! The assignments have personally helped me to unlearn, learn and relearn. Each assignment is linked to practical application which was experienced by me while interning with a social enterprise. These assignments have also taught me to work in dynamic conditions within a group, manage tasks individually and moreover the emphasis is given on reading to stay updated with the latest developments in the sector. Some assignments also included field work to accomplish the objectives of that assignment and seeing the on ground picture added greater value to our understanding of the course.

Each course is very well drafted and the course outline is shared with us a week in prior to the Course. This helps us to understand the objectives of the Course well in advance and be prepared for each class. We are lucky and feel blessed to learn from faculty who have vast experience in the sector. Cherry on the cake, most of our professors are PHDs. The insights they share in class are valued more than any other information we have read through any source. The faculty have been a teacher, friend and guide to all of us. They have always been there to guide us and help us at all times. We could not have imagined studying and learning about social enterprises sans them at NMIMS.

This Course has helped me immensely and with 15 more months to go, this Course is already helping me shape my dream of starting my own social enterprise, in the same way it has helped alumnus like Jyotika Bhatia and Vaishali Gandhi, founders of Srujna and many others!
